STEPHENS, Helen Joyce Peacefully on January, 13, 2011 at the age of 60 comforted both physically and in spirit by her family and friends, who will miss her greatly. Helen is survived by her husband, John, son, Michael (Kristin), and daughter Sara (Nathan). She is also survived by her parents, Keith and Beatrice Maxwell, sister, Brenda, and brothers Ian and Richard. Helen cherished the gift of her two grandchildren, Anna and Spencer. One of her most valued accomplishments was attending Algonquin College as a mature student to very successfully attain her diploma in social service work. Later on, as a teacher of social service worker students, it gave her great pride and joy to witness her students flourishing and developing into competent professionals. Helen had a passion for creating and sharing beauty through her quilting, cooking, gardening and decorating. Kind and compassionate, Helen's love for the people and animals she encountered in all walks of life was her hallmark. Her wide circle of deep friendships was a source of joy and support. Special thank you to the Palliative Care Team, the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital and to her non-traditional practitioners who assisted Helen in her wellness. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 580 Eagleson Rd, Kanata, Monday, January 17, 2011 after 12:00 p.m. A Service in Memory of Helen will follow in the Chapel at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Make a Wish Foundation or the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated.

I was saddened today when I heard that Helen had died of cancer. It was less then 5 years ago that I saw Helen at the 60's Reunion at Riverdale High School. She looked so beautiful and vibrant. Helen was in the same grade as me and this loss is a reminder for me to be grateful for every day that we are alive here on earth.

Brenda, we mourn with you for the loss of your dear sister.

What a shock to learn about Helen. I remember her dearly. Almost every day we walked together to Riverdale, we lived on the same street. I remember her smile, she always was so happy to see me and we laughed together all the way to school.

I too, am the same age and Bev, you are so right, we have to cherish everyday we are on this beautiful earth.

My heart goes out to her family, they will miss her so.

I have always had great memories of Helen and her sister Brenda, they were inseparable, so it appeared, just the other day I was looking at the old year books and remembering our home room class in which Helen sat in front of me, her, with her impish grin, we had some great laughs there.

To Brenda and Helen's family, my heartfelt condolences go out to you for your loss of such a special person at such an early age. I hope that you are strong for each other to get through this difficult time.
